Real Madrid manage to secure a narrow win away from home as their attempts to sign Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain are ongoing. Here’s what happened at the Estadio Benito Villamarín yesterday.

Real Madrid just about secured a narrow win at Real Betis as they waited on the outcome of their ongoing attempt to sign Paris St-Germain (PSG) superstar forward Kylian Mbappe.

When right-back Dani Carvajal volleyed Karim Benzema’s accurate cross into the bottom left of the net on 61 minutes, it looked like the match was headed for a goalless draw. This was Carvajal’s first goal for Madrid since the 30th of November 2019!

Benzema fluffed a good chance early on, when he pulled the ball wide from 15 yards with the game goalless, while Carvajal had an attempt pushed over the crossbar before scoring.

Betis went close through Nabil Fekir’s free-kick. He nearly beat Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a well-struck ball at the keepers near-post, but the Belgian was up to the challenge.

Real Madrid are now top of La Liga after 3 games, level on 7 points with Sevilla, Valencia, and Mallorca.

However, they are reportedly keen on strengthening their attacking options by signing France World Cup winner Mbappe before next week’s transfer deadline.

PSG sporting director Leonardo said the club would “not hold Mbappe back” but considered Real’s £137m bid to be “not sufficient“.

This week has been dominated by discussions surrounding Kylian Mbappe’s possible move to Real Madrid. However, Vinicius Junior is currently proving that Real Madrid can cope without Mbappe if a deal can’t be done with PSG. The Brazilian appears to have added a genuine cutting edge to his game and has given Real Madrid a new attacking dimension in the first part of the season!
