With an official capacity of 87,523, the Estadio Azteca is the largest stadium in Mexico and one of the largest in the world. Its compact stands, which make players feel as if fans are literally on top of them, is one of the many things which make the stadium one of the most iconic in the world. The “Azteca” is also scheduled to host games during the 2026 FIFA World Cup that will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
With a capacity of 90,000 – Wembley Stadium is England’s national stadium and is the location where the England’s national team play all their home matches. Designed by Populous and Foster and Partners, the stadium features a 134-metre-high Wembley Arch which serves as a landmark across London! In todays US Dollars, the stadium cost a massive $1.6 Billion USD to build – no wonder it is referred to as a “Hallowed Turf”!
This stadium, which is home to the South African Premier Soccer League as well as key fixtures for the South African national football team, has a capacity of 94,736, making it the biggest stadium in Africa and one of the biggest stadiums in the world. It also had quite a hefty price tag, at $440 million. During the 2010 World Cup, the stadium was home to many of the famous ‘vuvuzelas’ South African fans were seen using to cheer on their national team.
With a seating capacity of 99,354, Barcelona FC’s home is the largest stadium in Spain and in the whole of Europe! The sound at this stadium is said to be incredible, with visiting players’ concentration impacted by the cheering of the crowd. It has hosted two European Cup/Champions League finals in 1989 and 1999, two European Cup Winners’ Cup finals, five UEFA Super Cup games, four Copa del Rey finals, two Copa de la Liga finals, and twenty-one Supercopa de España finals, and five matches in the 1982 FIFA World Cup!
While North Korea may be called the ‘Hermit Kingdom’, there is no doubt that its national stadium was designed to impress! With a capacity of 114,000 people – the population of a small country – it is the crown jewel in North Korea’s attempt to project a strong image to the world. While the stadium is used for sporting events, it is more frequently the site of massive performances and shows celebrating President Kim Il-sung and the North Korean nation.
The largest professional wrestling pay-per-view event ever was held at Rungrado Stadium on April 28-29, 1995, named “Collision in Korea”. Attendance on the second day of the event topped 190,000! This is, by our records, the largest audience for a sporting event in world history!
