Bayern Munich cruised past hosts Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth 3-1 on Friday, despite playing almost the whole of the 2nd half with 10 men. The win has enabled the defending champions to open up a 3-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga.
However, Bayern Munich’s top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski saw his scoring streak broken, after he failed to equal Gerd Müller’s all-time record of scoring in 16 consecutive league games.
With just 10 minutes on the clock, Bayern took the lead when Thomas Müller slotted in from a fortunate Alphonso Davies cut-back that took a deflection off a defender and fell kindly to the striker.
Joshua Kimmich was then incredibly accurate with a low side-footed strike that perfectly beat Sascha Burchert in the Fürth goal, for him to score his 3rd league goal this season, after netting twice last week.
A wild challenge by Benjamin Pavard on 48 minutes left Julian Nagelsmann’s team with 10 men, but it didn’t change the dynamic of the game, as Bayern continued to dominate proceedings.
Then a 68th-minute own goal by Sebastian Griesbeck, under pressure from Lewandowski, killed off any hopes of a comeback that Stefan Leitl’s Fürth might have had.
The home side did however produce a fine moment when Cedric Itten headed in a cross in the 87th minute to reduce the deficit. The home fans were delirious when the goal went in, but they knew that it would only be a consolation effort.
Bayern Munich now take on Dynamo Kyiv in the UEFA Champions League next week. They move up to 16 points from 6 matches and are 3 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth are bottom of the league, with just 1 point so far.
