Superstars underwhelm again, but Senegalese star Gueye nets a stunning opener. Draxler secures the points with a late strike, as PSG maintain 100% record!

Paris St-Germain maintained their 100% record in Ligue 1 with a 2-0 victory over Montpellier at Parc des Princes. Kylian Mbappe and Neymar had quiet nights, whilst Lionel Messi missed this game with a knee injury.

Senegalese midfielder Idrissa Gueye fired Ángel di María’s lay-off into the roof of the net from the edge of the box for his 3rd goal of the season after 15 minutes. It was a stunning left-footed strike!

Substitute Julian Draxler added a 2nd two minutes before the final whistle. He received the ball in the Montpellier penalty box and fired a stinging shot that went through goalkeeper Jonas Omlin’s legs and into the goal at the near post.

Before his mistake, Omlin was keeping the visitors in the contest. He stopped Gueye’s attempt at a 2nd and provided a great save at full stretch to stop Nicolas Cozza from scoring an own goal when Mbappe’s cross was deflected.

Michel Der Zakarian’s Montpellier managed tentative efforts from Téji Savanier and Junior Sambia, but they never got enough players forward to cause PSG any real problems.

Achraf Hakimi and Mbappe linked well together all night, and they almost combined to double PSG’s lead 25 minutes from time, but Mbappe missed the target.

With 19 minutes remaining, Neymar wasted a golden opportunity after meeting Ander Herrera’s pass. However, the miss would prove to be of little consequence when Draxler killed off the game!

The win gives PSG 8 wins from 8 Ligue 1 matches so far. As Mauricio Pochettino’s team prepare to host Manchester City in the Champions League this week, PSG are now 1st in Ligue 1 and the only team with a 100% record. Montpellier are in 12th.
