Brentford put on yet another great show against West Ham on Sunday as they slowly but surely settle in the upper part of the English Premier League (EPL) table.
West Ham welcomed the EPL rookies Brentford at Olympic Stadium in East London and they surely did not expect to come out of the match with no points. Now Brentford may be the new guys in the Premier League, but they already showed us that they belong there. The Bees beat Arsenal and Wolverhampton, and in their last match they drew against Liverpool 3-3.
Both teams played fast-paced football and kept the spectators excited and up on their legs. The result could have swung either way. Brentford started off much better with Bryan Mbeumo testing the strength of the crossbar as early as 3 minutes into the match. One minute later he had yet another chance, but he missed the left post with a header by only a tiny margin.
It was in the 20th minute of the match that Mbeumo finally managed to score after finding his way to a rebound. West Ham goal-keeper Fabianski nearly saved it, but the ball already crossed the goal-line when he got his hands on it.
West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen managed to equalize on 80 minutes after a corner kick. Brentford goal-keeper Raya could only stand and watch as the powerful low shot slipped past him right into the net.
The Hammers couldn’t save the 1-1 draw though, as Brentford winger Yoane Wissa scored from basically an identical situation following a corner kick as Bowen did only 14 minutes prior. The final score reads 2-1 for Brentford.
Brentford now have 12 points and occupy 7th place in the EPL, while West Ham are only a point behind and sit in 9th place. Can Thomas Frank’s Bees keep up the pace? We’ll see after the international break is over. They will face the much favored Chelsea, the current EPL leaders, on the 16th of October.
