Müller’s Late Strike Sinks Romania!

Germany take all three World Cup qualifying points against Romania, as the game finishes 2-1 in Hamburg!

Thomas Müller saved Germany with a late winner, as the hosts came from behind to earn a nervous 2-1 win over Romania in Friday’s World Cup qualifier.

In the opening minutes of this game in Hamburg, the Germans were denied a penalty by VAR after slight contact on Timo Werner. However, Romania took a shock ninth-minute lead when Rangers winger Ianis Hagi slipped through the defence and netted past Marc-Andre ter Stegen with a fine left-footed strike.

Then, shortly after the break, Serge Gnabry equalised with his 20th goal in 30 internationals on 52 minutes. He picked up Marco Reus’ lay-off just outside the box and fired a stinging right-footed drive that beat Romania goalkeeper Florin Niță with ease.

Müller came off the bench to earn his 107th Germany appearance and claimed his 40th international goal nine minutes before the final whistle. He gambled and made a run to the back-post, where he picked up Leon Goretzka’s perfectly weighted headed cross and fired home the winner!

“It was annoying to concede the early goal, but the team fought, never gave up, and played with confidence. In the end, the win is more than deserved as we dominated for long stretches,” said Germany head coach Hansi Flick.

The result extends Germany’s lead at the top of Group J ahead of Monday’s next qualifier away to North Macedonia. A win in Skopje would put the Germans on the brink of World Cup qualification. Meanwhile, Mirel Rădoi’s Romania now occupy fourth position on 10 points and will find it hard to qualify from there.
