Senegal and Morocco qualify for the play-offs! Kenya and Ethiopia are out of the race.
Morocco and Senegal became the first teams through to Africa’s play-offs for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after winning their qualifying games. Senegal earned their spot by beating Namibia 3-1 on Tuesday. Morocco joined Senegal in the play-offs as they beat hosts Guinea 4-1, in a Group I game that was postponed from last month following the political uncertainty in the Guinean capital Conakry.
The Harambee Stars look to be out of contention for a playoff spot after losing at home to Mali. Engin Firhat’s side are 3rd in Group E, but with only 2 points. Current leaders Mali must be favourites to win the group and progress into the next round, but Uganda are well placed in 2nd position on 8 points should Les Aigles slip up.
In Group B, Zambia sit in 3rd place, but without a realistic chance of progressing. The Copper Bullets have 4 points, but leaders Tunisia have 10 and Equatorial Guinea have 7. With just two games remaining, the Eagles of Carthage will be looking to nail down a playoff spot when they face Zambia at home on November the 14th.
South Africa top Group G on 10 points. Bafana Bafana have a chance of qualifying for their first World Cup finals since they hosted the competition in 2010. Ghana’s fearsome Black Stars might still have something to say about that, however, as they sit in second, just one point behind South Africa. Ethiopia find themselves adrift from the leaders on just 3 points and unable to qualify. Zimbabwe are rock bottom of the group with 1 point.
Meanwhile, in Group J, Tanzania lead the table on 7 points, but only on goal difference from second-placed Benin. The Taifa Stars’ fate is in their own hands when they host the Democratic Republic of Congo on November the 11th. As for the Leopards, they must go all out to win against Tanzania and then hope other results go their way.
