Liverpool Win a Thriller at Atlético Madrid!

Greizmann scores a brace and sees red for Atlético! Salah nets from the spot to make it 3-2 to Liverpool in this epic UEFA Champions League (UCL) encounter!

Liverpool made it three wins out of three in this year’s UCL, by beating Spanish champions Atlético Madrid in a game packed full of drama. Mohamed Salah continued his incredible streak of form and found the net twice on the night!

It was a fast-paced and exciting match in the Spanish capital. The two sides were both incredible going forward but weak in defence, and the Reds saw an early two-goal lead cancelled out by Antoine Griezmann’s double strike.

Salah gave Liverpool the lead with just eight minutes gone! The Egyptian magician’s low finish at the end of a trademark, jinxing run from the right flank found the net, after a deflection off the toe of James Milner.

Naby Keita’s fantastically struck volley from the edge of the box then doubled the Merseyside club’s advantage after 13 minutes.

Diego Simeone’s outfit pulled one back through Greizmann with the clock reading 20 minutes. Koke’s pass went through a sea of players and the Frenchman was in the right place at the back post to stick out a foot and direct the ball goalwards.

11 minutes before the break, the Atlético forward turned beautifully and shot across Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson to restore parity at 2-2.

The French forward was shown a straight red card early in the second half. This allowed Jürgen Klopp’s team to reassert their authority.

Liverpool then sealed an important victory with Salah’s well-taken penalty after 78 minutes. The forward sent Jan Oblak in the Atlético goal the wrong way, after the spot-kick was awarded for a clumsy barge on Diogo Jota by left-back Mario Hermoso.

Jota almost turned villain, though, as his challenge on Jose Maria Gimenez resulted in a penalty award for Atlético. However, the referee overturned his own decision after being encouraged by VAR to view the incident on the pitchside monitor.

The last word, however, went to Salah. The speedy Egyptian is now Liverpool’s record goalscorer in the UCL. These two goals take his tally to 31, which is one more than Steven Gerrard!

The Reds now top UCL Group B with a 100% record and 9 points. The Colchoneros are second with 6.
