Barcelona Finally Have a Champions League Breakthrough Against Dynamo Kyiv!

The Blaugrana secured their first European goal and victory, winning 1-0, with Gerard Pique volleying home to put the hosts ahead 10 minutes before half-time.

Barcelona earned a nervy 1-0 victory over Dynamo Kyiv in Champions League Group E on Wednesday, with Gerard Pique scoring the vital goal to keep alive the Spanish side’s hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

Jordi Alba’s cross was volleyed home by Pique in the 36th minute to register Barca’s first goal of this season’s competition, while securing their first victory after 0-3 defeats by Bayern Munich and Benfica.

The Dynamo Kyiv team, however, offered little attacking threat and did not muster a single shot on goal – and the lack of a convincing win for Barcelona may be seen as a cause for concern.

Barca coach Ronald Koeman left Ansu Fati, Philippe Coutinho, and Aguero on the bench while Sergino Dest, who usually plays left-back, played alongside Luuk de Jong and Memphis Depay in the attack.

After a couple of missed chances by Dest and De Jong Koeman showed his frustration by asking Fati and Coutinho to warm up after only 31 minutes.

But defender Pique eased the tension with a cool close-range finish from Alba’s cross before the Dutch coach was about to make the substitutions.

This means Barcelona head into Sunday’s game against Real Madrid at the Nou Camp on the back of successive wins this week, having beaten Valencia 3-1 at the weekend.

Barcelona manager Koeman was not celebrating after the game, critical of his team’s performance: “Thank goodness we were perfect defensively. We were superior, but we have to finish the game off. After an hour we should have been three- or four-nil up.”
