Cristiano Ronaldo scored another late UEFA Champions League (UCL) winner as Manchester United came back from two goals down at the break, to beat Atalanta in an Old Trafford thriller.
United came into the game with just one win in their last five games in all competitions and their poor form under Ole Gunnar Solskjær looked like continuing when the visitors found the net through Mario Pašalić and Merih Demiral.
United, who kept Atalanta goalkeeper Juan Musso busy all evening, came out fighting in the second half and were level through fine finishes from Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire, before another winning intervention from Ronaldo, who powered in a bullet header from an accurate Luke Shaw cross.
The Red Devils started brightly but went one goal behind 15 minutes in, when one former Chelsea man in Davide Zappacosta, found another in Pašalić, to give the latter a tap in at the far post.
Fred’s powerful strike was then saved by Musso, before Gian Piero Gasperini’s side shocked Old Trafford with another goal. Demiral stepped up and produced a fine header from a corner to give Atalanta a two-goal advantage. The lead really should have been reduced before half-time, as Fred fired wide before Rashford clipped the top of the crossbar.
United, who were 0-2 down at the break in a UCL match for the very first time, were booed off at half-time but came out flying for the second half.
Rashford expertly placed a shot into the bottom corner after a fantastic through ball from Bruno Fernandes, and Solskjær’s side were roared on by the home fans in search of an equaliser. Scott McTominay struck the woodwork and Musso saved a Ronaldo effort before David de Gea made a fabulous double save to keep United in the match.
The Spanish shot-stopper brilliantly saved shots from Duván Zapata and Ruslan Malinovskyi, and the hosts were level just four minutes later when Maguire found himself alone in the Atalanta box to sweep home a cross from Fernandes.
From then on, there was only one winner and the third goal duly arrived when Ronaldo climbed high to nod home a trademark header for his 137th Champions League goal and raise the roof at The Theatre of Dreams!
United are now at the summit of UCL Group F, having been bottom for a period in the first half, ahead of trips to Atalanta and Villarreal. Atalanta are second with 4 points.
