Italy’s top-flight is usually a strategic and defensively-minded place. Sometimes, though, it isn’t! Let’s check out three games that rocked Italy’s stadiums!

Roma 4-5 Inter ​(1998/99)

In season 1998/99, Inter travelled to Rome and got involved in an incredible battle at the Stadio Olimpico. Roma were forever chasing the game, but having found themselves 2-0 and 3-1 down, they somehow managed to eventually level the scores at 3-3!

The Nerazzurri regain the lead, but Eusebio Di Francesco equalises again for the hosts with just ten minutes to play. All of Roma’s hard work is undone three minutes from time however, when Diego Simeone scores the winner to break Roman hearts! 

Lazio 4-4 AC Milan (1999/00) 

This encounter was a real goal-fest and a huge game in the title race. Lazio and AC Milan met at the Stadio Olimpico, and the stage was set for the elite stars of the beautiful game to show what they could do. In this clash in Rome in 1999, it was Andriy Shevchenko who really shone!

The game looks to be going one way and then the other, swinging in and out of the two sides’ reach, until the Ukrainian superstar nets an incredible 25-minute hat-trick. Lazio fight back to claim a point, which proves vital in their successful quest to lift the trophy at the end of the season! 

Lazio 2-3 Inter Milan (2017/18)

On the final day of the 2017/18 season, Inter travelled to Rome, knowing they needed a victory against the Eagles to earn a UEFA Champions League place. 

Going into half-time, Lazio are 2-1 up and completely controlling the pace of the game. Then things start to go wrong. Stefan de Vrij recklessly gives away a penalty with 12 minutes to go. Mauro Icardi then steps up and converts the spot-kick. Senad Lulić is sent off a minute later for the hosts, and Matias Vecino nods in a header two minutes after that to sink the team from the Italian capital!
