Crystal Palace Shock Manchester City with a 2-goal Win at the Etihad!

In one of the biggest upsets of the season so far, Manchester City lost at home to Crystal Palace, as Wilfried Zaha and Conor Gallagher fired in the goals for the Eagles.

Crystal Palace beat Manchester City on Saturday in one of the biggest shocks of the season so far. Palace came into this game off the back of four straight draws, but impressed with their performance levels against one of the favourites to win the title this season.

Palace started like a team full of confidence, they pressed City early on, leading to a shock opening goal when Aymeric Laporte passed into no-man’s land having been spooked by pressure from Gallagher and Zaha. Zaha then hit a low left-footed shot across Ederson into the far corner.

Pep Guardiola’s side attempted to get back into the game in the second half, and they thought they had levelled when Gabriel Jesus poked home a shot at the back post, but the goal was ruled out by VAR as Phil Foden was offside in the build-up.

Furthermore, referee Andre Marriner red-carded Laporte in first-half stoppage time when he committed a foul by bringing down Zaha 35 yards from the City goal.

That decision seemed to deflate City, and Palace counter-attacked shrewdly in the final stages, with Gallagher firing home to seal the points. Not only did Gallagher score a goal, but he was rated superb in midfield, his energy helping to shield a defence who, at times, did well not to be lured into giving away a penalty.

“We cannot say that we had many but we had enough chances in the first half to score”, Guardiola said after the match.

“When 10 against 11 it is more difficult, we scored a goal, it was disallowed and even Rodri had one or two chances to score. At the end, the counter-attack anything can happen.”
