There are goals that are uniquely brilliant. The best players in the world are defined by the fact that they frequently score such goals. Lothar Matthäus was one of those players. In a 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen, the midfielder scored the German ‘Goal of the Year’ for the second time in his career, following his stunning solo effort against Yugoslavia in the 1990 World Cup.
Mehmet Scholl puts the ball down for a corner, but instead of crossing it into the penalty area, he plays it back, where Matthäus is ready and waiting to hammer the ball into the top corner from around 20 metres out!
“You can try something like that a thousand times but it might only come off once,” recalled the 1990 World Cup winner.
At only 23 years old, Jürgen Klinsmann scored a legendary bicycle kick goal in a game against then-German champions, Bayern Munich. The stunning strike was one of 19 goals that year for Klinsmann. It helped him take home the Bundesliga’s top scorer award. More importantly, the young striker raised eyebrows across Europe, and his first appearance for the German National Team followed less than a month later.
The cross is played on the volley into the Bayern Munich box. Klinsmann meets the ball perfectly with an athletic bicycle kick, which rockets into the back of the Bayern net and into the history books!
This goal from the former Real Madrid manager was named Bundesliga Goal of the Decade for the 1990s. We are naming it the best Bundesliga strike of all time! Schuster may have been 34 when he joined Bayer Leverkusen, but he remained a class act, after spells with Real Madrid, Atlético, and Barcelona. Schuster was named first, second and third in the Bundesliga Goal of the Season that year, with this the best of the bunch!
Picking up the ball in midfield, the German international launches the ball over the Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper and into the goal from an incredible distance! The fact that the keeper isn’t far off his line makes it even more special!
