Liverpool welcome the La Liga champions Atlético Madrid to Anfield for Wednesday’s Champions League Group B encounter, as they seek to complete a memorable double over the Spanish side.
Liverpool enter Wednesday’s match off the back of a frustrating draw with Brighton, as Mohamed Salah’s remarkable 10-game goalscoring run came to an end against the Seagulls.
However, the first Champions League encounter between Liverpool and Atlético this season was very different. Salah was up to his old tricks and put his side 1-0 up before a Naby Keita stunner in the 13th minute doubled the Reds’ advantage.
A hectic first half would then see Antoine Griezmann pull his side level with a brace before halftime, but after the Frenchman saw red with 52 minutes on the clock, Salah dispatched the game-winning penalty following Mario Hermoso’s clumsy challenge on Diogo Jota.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are riding high at the top of Group B in the Champions League and can guarantee progress into the knockout rounds with all three points on Wednesday.
Despite the fact Liverpool may have thrown away two points against Brighton, that result at least marked their 24th consecutive game without defeat in all competitions, and manager Jürgen Klopp has now witnessed his side score at least two goals in their last 12 games across all tournaments.
In terms of injuries, Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita is out with a hamstring issue, while James Milner and Harvey Elliott look likely to join him. It remains to be seen if Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara will be cleared to play as Klopp continues to cope with ongoing injury issues in midfield.
Look for Liverpool to win again, as Mohamed Salah continues his form with at least one goal.
