The African connection of Mané and Salah puts the Reds two up, before Chelsea fight back to 2-2, courtesy of strikes from Kovačić and Pulisic!

Chelsea came back from 2-0 down to register a draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, in an English Premier League (EPL) thriller on Sunday.

Liverpool boss, Jürgen Klopp, was absent from the game after a suspected positive test for COVID-19, while Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, sidelined £97.5m record signing, Romelu Lukaku, following a controversial interview in which the Belgian suggested that he is unhappy at Chelsea.

The visitors began the game brightly and Sadio Mané, who was lucky to receive only a yellow card after taking out César Azpilicueta with a high elbow in the opening seconds, seized on Trevoh Chalobah’s error to put the Reds into the lead after nine minutes.

Mohamed Salah’s moment of individual genius, a drop of the shoulder to fool Marcos Alonso, then a perfect near-post finish put Liverpool into a commanding 2-0 lead, just before the half-hour mark.

The Chelsea fightback began on the stroke of halftime. Mateo Kovačić’s jaw-dropping volley flew beyond visiting keeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, after 42 minutes, before Christian Pulisic went clear to level in stoppage time.

In an enthralling game, both teams had opportunities to win in the second half, with Chelsea keeper, Edouard Mendy, brilliantly foiling both Salah and Mané, while Kelleher thwarted Pulisic.

The result means that Chelsea (43 points) and Liverpool (42 points) remain in second and third place respectively. Although the Reds have a game in hand over Manchester City and Chelsea, Pep Guardiola’s outfit are now in control of the title race, 10 points clear of the Blues, at the summit of the table.
