Wolverhampton Wanderers travel to the Theatre of Dreams and come away with their first victory there for over forty years!
Manchester United went down to their first defeat under interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, suffering a 1-0 loss at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League (EPL) on Monday.
An 82nd-minute goal from João Moutinho gave Wolves their first triumph at Old Trafford since 1980 and moved Bruno Lage’s outfit up to eighth position in the EPL.
Following a poor display, United remain in seventh place on 31 points, four behind Arsenal, who currently occupy the fourth Champions League spot.
Wolves created a host of opportunities in the first half, but it wasn’t until eight minutes from time that they got their reward when Moutinho pounced on a headed clearance from Phil Jones and fired past United keeper, David de Gea.
German coach, Rangnick, witnessed a disjointed performance from his team, with no sign of the high-energy pressing play that he had initially tried to introduce.
The injury-prone Jones made his first EPL appearance in almost two years, with the interim boss selecting the former England defender in the absence of Victor Lindelöf, Harry Maguire, and Eric Bailly.
The 29-year-old had delivered a decent performance on his return, before his poor header out to Moutinho, which led to the goal.
Wolves could easily have had a comfortable lead before the break, with Daniel Podence, Rúben Neves, and Nelson Semedo all forcing saves from De Gea early on.
The home side created little, with their best opening of the first half culminating in Edinson Cavani blasting a strike wide when he should have passed to Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood had been the Red Devils’ best player and there were boos from the home stands when he was withdrawn to make way for the introduction of Bruno Fernandes.
Moutinho then settled the affair eight minutes from time, with his low shot past the helpless De Gea, that set off wild celebrations from the travelling supporters.
