Chelsea in Control of EFL Cup Tie with Spurs!

Chelsea in Control of EFL Cup Tie with Spurs!

Havertz gets one and Davies finds the back of his own net, as Chelsea overpower Tottenham Hotspur in west London!

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge but had so many opportunities that they should have already secured their place at Wembley.

Kai Havertz gave Chelsea an early advantage when he latched onto Marcos Alonso’s through-ball and stroked home with Davinson Sánchez unable to keep the shot out on the line, after 5 minutes.

The Blues‘ second was a comedy own goal as Japhet Tanganga headed the ball into team-mate, Ben Davies’ shoulder, before it sailed into the net, with the clock reading 34 minutes.

Romelu Lukaku, back in the XI after a one-game exile for comments he made in an interview, had several chances and headed wide from a close-range sitter.

Spurs boss, Antonio Conte switched to a back four after a horrendous first half and the north Londoners had to wait until the 50th minute for a shot, but Harry Kane’s free-kick was well saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

But the opportunities continued to come for the home side, with Spurs keeper, Hugo Lloris, foiling Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech, and the returning Timo Werner.

Spurs will need a lot of improvement in a week’s time in the second leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to have any chance of reaching the final.

Liverpool and Arsenal lock horns in the other semi-final, with their matches on the 13th and 20th of January. Their first leg was rearranged because of a high number of Covid cases in the Liverpool camp.
